LA CENERENTOLA: Gioachino Rossini, 1817. A fairytale opera with no fairy and no glass slipper which has nevertheless established itself as a firm audience favourite. There are three versions; the completely uncut version used as the basis for ETO’s 2023 production, a version without chorus, suitable for small companies and finally the ’60 Minute Cinders’, commissioned by the Royal Opera House for a school audience.

PARTENOPE: Georg Frideric Händel, 1730. Partenope, warrior-queen and founder of Naples, is pursued by three suitors, including her neighbouring enemy. One of the suitors has left behind a previous fiancée, who now pursues him disguised as a man. Original commission from Iford Arts. N.B. This is in ‘full score’ format rather than piano score. LA FORZA DELL’AMOR PATERNO: Alessandro Stradella, 1678. A father relinquishes his claim on his beautiful fiancée when he discovers that his son’s madness is caused by his love for the same woman. Original commission from Barber Opera. This rare baroque romantic comedy has been condensed to a performing time of about 2 hours 40 minutes, which gives ample opportunity to experience the melodic invention of Stradella in his prime. There is comedy and tragedy, madness and ecstasy, all in a seamless blend of flowing recitative and bravura arias.

L’Ormindo

L’ORMINDO: Francesco Cavalli, 1644. Two moorish princes vie for the love of Erisbe, unhappily married to the aged Hariadeno. While one eventually returns to his earlier love, the other is discovered to be Hariadeno’s son, and ends happily in possession of his father’s kingdom. Original commission from The Royal Opera House. This baroque rarity is in a version substantially cut for performance in Kasper Holten’s production at the Sam Wanamaker Theatre.

Orfeo

ORFEO: Luigi Rossi, 1647. An unusual telling of the Orpheus myth with much comic intervention from the characters of Olympus and a sub-plot involving the shepherd, Aristæus, who is haughtily spurned by Eurydice for daring to help her as she lies dying. Original commission from The Royal Opera House. Rossi’s piece ran for well over four hours at its premiere – this is the shortened edition used for the ROH production by Keith Warner at the Wanamaker Theatre. LA PERICHOLE: Jacques Offenbach, 1868. The Viceroy of Peru installs a street-singer who has taken his fancy in his palace; her lover believes her to have been unfaithful and is imprisoned when he challenges the Viceroy.  Original commission from Morley Opera. This is the three act version and includes no dialogues, only the musical numbers.
